Candace Owens Thinks You Can “Convert and Get Rich Quick” in Israel: She’s Wrong.

The Lie:

  • Anyone can convert to Judaism, move to Israel, and receive automatic citizenship, tax breaks, and hundreds of thousands of American taxpayer dollars, while Palestinians are denied all basic human rights.

The Truth:

  • Israel’s Law of Return allows Jews — including recognized converts — to apply for immigration, not instant citizenship or financial rewards. Non-Jewish residents, including Arabs, can apply for Israeli citizenship through the regular naturalization process and receive the same full rights as all Israeli citizens.

Background

  • Passed in 1950, the Law of Return guarantees that Jews persecuted anywhere can seek refuge in Israel, similar repatriation laws in Ireland, Greece, or Armenia’s diaspora laws.
  • The law was amended in 1954 and 1970 to bar criminals and security risks, and to include converts and descendants of Jews.
  • Arab citizens of Israel, about 2 million people (21% of the population), have Israeli passports, vote, hold office, and enjoy full civil rights (iCenter, 2023).

Truth Explained

  • No instant citizenship or large payments:
The Law of Return allows eligible Jews to apply for immigration. Applicants undergo background and security checks and only later receive citizenship. New immigrants (“olim”) receive an absorption basket. This basket is funded by the Israeli Government and includes a modest stipend of roughly $2,000–$3,000 total, plus short-term health coverage and Hebrew classes to help them get settled in their new country. They do not receive “hundreds of thousands of dollars.” (Law of Return, Knesset.gov.il)
  • Israel is the historic homeland of the Jewish people: The Jewish nation has maintained an unbroken presence in the Land of Israel for over 3,000 years, continuously praying toward Jerusalem and returning in every generation — the only people to make it their ancestral, cultural, and spiritual center. The Law of Return ensures that every Jew has the right to come home. (Jewish Virtual Library)
  • There are 22 Arab nations — but only one Jewish state: Israel is the world’s only Jewish homeland, created to ensure Jewish self-determination and safety after centuries of persecution. (Times of Israel, July 19, 2018)
  • Arab citizens already have equal rights inside Israel: They elect representatives, serve as judges and doctors, and sit on the Supreme Court. They are not required to serve in the army but enjoy the same civil protections and benefits as Jewish citizens. (iCenter, FAQ on Arab Citizens of Israel, 2023)
  • U.S. aid isn’t funding “free money” for immigrants: Over 70% of U.S. aid to Israel is used for joint military defense systems like Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and THAAD. These defense systems are manufactured largely in the U.S. and support 20,000 American jobs. (AJC, 2025)
  • Palestinians lack citizenship because they reject Israel’s sovereignty: The Palestinian Authority and Hamas refuse to recognize Israel as a legitimate state. Citizenship requires acknowledging the country’s existence — something Palestinian leadership has repeatedly rejected. (BESA Center, 2019)
  • “Palestinian roots” are a modern political myth: Historical records show that much of the Arab population in British Mandate Palestine were migrants from Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and other Arab lands between 1832–1947, drawn by Jewish economic development. (Ettinger Report, 2019)
  • The Palestinian “right of return” is not recognized in international law: UN Resolution 194 is non-binding and applies only to refugees “wishing to live at peace.” It creates no legal right of mass repatriation. “Neither under international conventions nor UN resolutions do Palestinian refugees have a right to return to Israel.” (Ruth Lapidoth, MFA, 2001)

Quotes

  • “Every Jew has the right to come to this country as an oleh.” — Law of Return (1950)
  • “This short survey has shown that neither under the international conventions, nor under the major UN resolutions, nor under the relevant agreements between the parties, do the Palestinian refugees have a right to return to Israel.” — Prof. Ruth Lapidoth, Hebrew University
  • “Officially, Arab citizens of Israel have legal rights and status equal to all other Israeli citizens.” — The iCenter / IATF (2023)
  • “Nearly three-quarters of the aid to Israel is delivered in the form of advanced weaponry… produced in the United States. … It directly supports over 20,000 jobs in the U.S.”  — AJC (2025)

Takeaway

  • Israel’s Law of Return is a humanitarian refuge policy — not a privilege program — and every Israeli citizen, Jewish or Arab, enjoys equal rights in a democratic state that its enemies refuse to recognize.
